VITAL research into childhood kidney problems has been given a cash boost thanks to the joint efforts of staff and customers at a builders’ merchant branch.
The Sutton in Ashfield branch of Jackson Building Centres is supporting Nottingham City Hospital’s Kinder Appeal which raises money for research into kidney disease as well as providing support for young patients and their families.
The branch recently presented a cheque for £2,600 to the appeal after Jackson’s employee Helen Barratt approached Sutton branch manager Lyndon Johnson for support. Helen, who works in the branch’s kitchen section, was keen to drum up support for the cause after her daughter Laura, 15, underwent a life-saving kidney transplant at the hospital last year. Laura, whose new kidney was donated by her father Stephen, has suffered medical problems since the age of one but is now progressing well.
Donations to the Kinder Appeal flooded in from customers, suppliers and staff resulting in the impressive total. One of Helen’s colleagues, ironmongery manager Richard Merry, raised hundreds of pounds by taking part in this year’s London Marathon.
The Sutton branch on Coxmoor Road supports a chosen charity each year and has raised thousands of pound for worthwhile causes. Lyndon, who has managed the branch since 1990, said he was very happy to back such an important appeal.
“We managed to get sponsorship and donations from about 100 people and Richard Merry made a significant contribution through his marathon run so our fundraising has been quite a success,” he said.
The cheque was presented to Dr Alan Watson, clinical director of the children and young people’s kidney unit at Nottingham City Hospital.
A hospital spokeswoman said: "We are extremely grateful to the Sutton branch of Jackson Building Centres for their generosity. This is a significant amount of money which we will use to advance research into the causes, treatment and prevention of kidney disease in children and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families."
