JACKSON'S SPONSORS VE/VJ DAY COMMEMORATION

16th May 2005

A LINCOLN-based builders’ merchant is supporting the city’s commemoration of the 60th anniversary of VE/VJ Day by donating cash to fund the celebrations.

Jackson Building Centres is the main sponsor of the event and has given organisers £2,000 to help finance the day-long project arranged for later this year.

The Lincolnshire Committee of Reserve Forces and Cadets Association has organised a military tattoo, along with fixed display stands and entertainment in Lincoln Castle on July 17.

Event co-ordinator Colonel Geoffrey Newmarch said: “We are delighted with Jackson’s contribution to support the event which has helped enormously with the costs of the day. The event is free to attend and we are aiming for a relaxed, village fete atmosphere.”

Colin Bartleet, Jackson’s marketing manager, said: “We are extremely pleased to be associated with such a significant event in the city of Lincoln and are always happy to support the community when possible.”

War veterans will be taking centre stage on the day, with members of the Army, Navy and RAF marching under 40 Lincolnshire standards leading the procession into the castle at 11.30am. Young people will also play their part in the celebration with Army Cadets, Sea Cadets and Air Training Corps all represented. The event will culminate in a sunset ceremony at 5.30pm with the massed bands and Association Standards displayed.

As well as bands and marching displays there will be presentations by the RAF Guard Dog Display Team, the St John Ambulance Display Team, and students of Yarborough School and Lincoln Community College.
