HERE comes the sun! As the weather gets warmer many of us have started to prepare the ground and nurture plants for summer colour.
But before the time comes for putting in bedding plants it is a good idea to think carefully about the structure of your garden. Do you have a sunny spot to sit in and enjoy the results of your efforts, or a suitable area to entertain friends and family? Or perhaps you want to create a pathway, install fencing, walling or edgings.
If you’re looking for inspiration then it’s worth paying a visit to your local builders’ merchant which will stock a large variety of items. They also have the advantage of having knowledgeable staff on hand who provide help and advice on a daily basis to trade and retail customers.
Outlets such as Jackson Building Centres, which has branches throughout the East Midlands and South Yorkshire, offer everything from decorative chippings to fencing and paving slabs. There is a vast choice – where once there was simply gravel now you can select stones in a range of colours and shapes from slivers of blue slate to Scottish beach pebbles worn smooth by the sea.
It is vital to chose the right colour and finish to complement your garden scheme which could range from a minimalist contemporary look to a sun-baked Mediterranean feel or a classic cottage garden. Many of Jackson’s branches have patio display areas where a range of paving stones, edgings, decking, stone planters, pebbles, decorative chippings and other items have been laid out. Customers can browse at their leisure and get an accurate idea of how different products will look in the garden.
You may choose to create your own combination of garden products, or perhaps you prefer to buy a professionally designed ‘off the shelf’ kit.
The well known manufacturer Bradstone has created a new decorative stone circle – the Lindum Circle - which is being sold exclusively through Jackson Building Centres this year. The Lindum Circle has a variety of finishes and measures 2.8m across. It costs just £249.50 (including VAT) and Jackson’s qualified staff will be happy to advise on installation.
Another popular ready-to-lay package available from Jackson’s is the Plasmor Roma Patio Kit. This set includes a combination of naturally coloured paving in subtle blues, greys and terracotta, finished off with a border and matching central area. It is quick and easy to lay with no cutting. The kit covers 15 sq m and can be used in either a square or rectangle – giving a designer look for a very competitive price.
Jackson’s marketing manager Colin Bartleet said: “We are always keen to listen to what our customers want and keep up with constantly changing tastes in garden design.”
So if you need a place to put your feet up on your own patch this summer – now is the time for action.
