NEW jobs have been created at a builders’ merchant thanks to an increase in sales after a £2 million investment in purpose-built premises.

The new Swinton branch of Jackson Building Centres opened for business in January and more showroom staff and a new receptionist have already been appointed to deal with the rise in customer numbers. Now Jackson’s is planning to recruit extra sales counter and hire department staff because of the increased demand.

Assistant branch manager Gary McGowan said sales were up in all areas of the business which caters for trade, retail and account customers. “We are getting lots of visitors and are extremely busy in general. The extended kitchen and bathroom showrooms have attracted a lot of attention and we now have four people working in them at weekends when we previously managed with one,” he explained.

The showrooms feature working displays of the latest products in individual room settings including ultra modern kitchens and fireplaces and innovative bathrooms from some of the industries’ leading manufacturers.

“The new premises mean we can carry a far wider range of stock and the showrooms feature some very eye-catching products which have impressed our customers,” added Gary.

The store also has extended hire tool and timber departments along with a wider variety of plumbing and heating supplies, building materials, landscaping, ironmongery and decorating products.

Jackson’s has traded from premises on Rowms Lane since 1991 but the buildings had become outdated and are now being demolished. The new branch was built on a more prominent part of the site under the company’s continued programme of expansion and investment throughout the East Midlands and South Yorkshire.

The second phase of the project involves creating a much extended yard area in place of the former buildings which should be completed by summer.
