JACKSON’S CHARITY BID PAYS OFF
3rd September 2004
A LUCKY fundraiser will be able to take a well-deserved rest after winning a trip to a popular holiday spot.
Staff at Jackson Building Centres around the region competed in this year’s Lincoln 10k Run and raised more than £2,300 for the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance. The charity organised a prize draw for its supporters and the Jackson’s team scooped first prize.
Around 40 employees from the Lincoln-based builders’ merchants took part in the race and their efforts paid off when they made the single biggest donation to the Air Ambulance from this year’s event.
Now Grimsby branch plumbing department manager Steve Johnson is looking forward to a relaxing break at Center Parcs after a draw by the Air Ambulance fundraising Team to decide which competitor would win the prize.
Steve, who lives in Scartho and has worked at the Grimsby branch for 30 years, is a seasoned distance runner and completed the race in just under 53 minutes. He is currently in training for this month’s Great North Run which he is entering for the tenth time.
Steve, 57, is planning to take the four-day break at Center Parcs’ Sherwood Forest resort in Nottinghamshire in the autumn. His wife Bev, who is also a keen runner, his mother-in-law and sister-in-law and her two children, will join him.
Although he has never visited Center Parcs before, Steve was planning a family trip later this year so the prize couldn’t have come at a better time.
“It was a real surprise and I was very pleased to win,” he said. “We’re all really looking forward to it."
Vivienne Chambers, air ambulance fundraiser for Lincolnshire, said the charity was delighted that the Jackson's team had won first prize in the draw. “There are very few occasions when we are able to give away such a generous prize and we have Center Parcs to thank for that,” she explained.
“This is a very prestigious local event and it is good to see local businesses such as Jackson’s taking part. Coincidentally it was their team that raised the
largest amount. Altogether, over the three-year period, the air ambulance has benefited by £42,000. We are waiting to see if we will be the designated charity next year - if so, how about it Jackson’s?"
